Basil Classics is the latest extension of beautiful automobiles brought to you by our family since 1951. This 1954 Ford Crestline Skyliner is still another of these fine examples.
Ford Motor company has had many innovative ideas over the years to their credit. Probably the best of them was to begin mass assembly of their model "T" dating back to 1913 which proved to be a massage success. By late 1932, Ford upped their game and began production of their flat head V8 engine. Clyde Barrow of Bonny and Clyde fame was so impressed with the new Ford V8 engine that he sent a letter to Henry Ford on April 10th 1934, praising Mr. Ford for the power and acceleration the new engine provided.
By the late 1940s, Ford set their sights on sleeker body designs for their post war vehicles. A redesigned two door hardtop model was added to the Victoria line which debuted back in 1932.
In 1954, after a healthy 21-year run, Ford terminated their flathead V8 engine and introduced a new overhead valve V8 engine referred to as a "Y" block. The new design produced 139 horsepower out of a 239 cubic inch engine block. For one year only, 1954, this new engine was coupled with the Crestline Skyliner and a buyer could drive one off the showroom floor for $2,240. The Crestline Skyliner was also available for slightly less with a six-cylinder engine.
This 1954 Crestline Skyliner is a nicely preserved example of that one year only Ford presentation. The half plexiglass top only available on the Crestline Skyliner for one year, ran for just two more short years on the Victoria line before being discontinued forever at the close of the 1956 model year.
The overall condition of this 1954 Crestline Skyliner is nothing short of exceptional and the Cameo Coral roof atop the Sandstone white body colors perfectly accent the sleek yet simple style that Ford sought to present.
The chrome bumpers and body moldings show beautifully and are in remarkable condition. A single fordomatic call out emblem on the right rear trunk lid advises onlookers that Ford's automatic transmission has been ordered and installed as well. Full wheel covers and period correct wide whitewall tires complete the overall exterior appearance.
A look under the hood discloses that first year 239ci "Y" block engine cradled within a simple and clean engine compartment. The electrical system has been upgraded from 6 volts to a modern day 12 volt system and a dual exhaust helps to expedite exhaust gases to the rear of the car. A condenser has been added ahead of the radiator intended for use with an added air conditioning system which was not completed due to the passing of the prior owner.
A nearly all stock interior is smartly appointed in coral and black contrasting vinyl material which overall, is in excellent condition. The dashboard is done in factory black and the original see-through speedometer remains intact as well. The lower section of the dashboard is treated with a machined aluminum overlay that encompasses the original clock, radio, light and wiper switches and the ignition switch. Added beneath we see an assortment of aftermarket gauges which monitor the engine, a CD player and an AC evaporator which is not operational. Its tinted plexiglass half roof provides an open and airy feeling while seated in the interior of this well preserved example of a 1954 Crestline Skyliner. This is a rare example of a one owner year model and it may be a long while before you see another.
